Subarnapur District has figured on the Political & cultural map of odisha since the prehistoric period. It is bouded on the north by Sambalpur District, on the south and south east by Boudh District, on the east by Rairakhol Subdivion of Sambalpur District and in west Bolangir District. Majaraja Sudhansu Sekher Singh Deo in 1937, who happens to be the last chouhan ruler of Subarnapur. He executed a number of progressive reforms in the state for the welfare of the subjects. During his rule, Subarnapur kingdom was merged with the Odisha province on 1st January 1948 and became a Sub–Division under Bolangir District. However, from 1st April 1993, Subarnapur was given the status of a District Headquarter. According to the 2011 census Subarnapur district has a population of 652,107, roughly equal to the nation of Montenegro or the US state of Vermont. This gives it a ranking of 512th in India (out of a total of 640). The district has a population density of 279 inhabitants per square kilometre (720/sq mi) .
Around 8947 Women SHGs with 93646 members are functining in the District. SHGs are involved in a wide range of economic activities. This ranges from weaving in hand looms using primitive technology to fish farming and marketing of SHG products in Government alloted shops – “Mission Shakti Bazar” and other fairs with in and outside the State.
